Methanex Egypt is a joint venture of Methanex Corporation which holds a 50% interest, together with the Egyptian government partners in addition to the Arab Petroleum Investments Corporation (APICORP). Our facility in Egypt is the only methanol production facility in the country and has been in operation since 2011. Located on the Mediterranean Sea, our facility in Damietta has a production capacity of up to 1.3 million tonnes of methanol per year, primarily supplying domestic and European markets and is amongst the most energy efficient methanol plants in the world.
As a key player in the Egyptian oil, gas and petrochemicals sector, Methanex, in partnership with the Egyptian Petrochemicals Holding Company (ECHEM) launched an annual Process Safety Management (PSM) conference in 2018 to start a dialogue about this critical topic within the industry which has been running every year to date. In 2020, we signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Egyptian Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources to embed the culture of PSM within the Egyptian oil, gas and petrochemicals sector, in alignment with the Ministry’s modernization program. This resulted in the formation of the Egyptian Process Safety Management Steering Committee and a three-year roadmap for the industry. This successful partnership has led to the development of 24 high quality PSM standards and guidelines developed by the Egyptian Process Safety Steering Committee’s Technical Sub-Committee and approved and issued by the Egyptian General Petroleum Corporation (EGPC) for sector companies to follow and implement within their processes for safer operations across the industry. In 2023 Methanex Egypt received an award for “Best Safety Project of the Year” at the Egypt Petroleum Show (EGYPS) Global Sustainability in Energy Awards Ceremony in recognition of efforts leading the development of Process Safety Management framework for the Egyptian oil and gas sector.
Building on this momentum, a Memorandum of Understanding was signed between the Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources and Methanex Egypt in February 2025 to continue the strong partnership started in 2018. As an effective milestone towards the implementation of PSM best practices, the American University in Cairo (AUC) and Methanex Egypt signed a three-way protocol with the Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources in April 2025 to develop a professional PSM Diploma degree. Under this agreement, Methanex Egypt has committed to sponsoring 150 Ministry candidates over three years, with the first cohort of 32 professionals now successfully graduated. Support will continue for the remaining cohorts, reinforcing long-term, sector-wide capability.
Methanex Egypt has been committed to making a difference to its neighboring communities in Damietta through ensuring that positive impacts of our social investment experienced by the community and local partners are enhanced and meaningful to their existence. Our community investment priorities include health, education, sustainable development, and training.
Methanex Egypt has been supporting Damietta community journey towards embracing sustainable development as a vehicle for the growth in alignment with the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals 2030 through its successful partnership with the International Labor Organization (ILO) in 2019. This collaboration extended the ILO’s flagship project “Decent Jobs for Egypt’s Young People” (DJEP) to the governorate, resulting in the empowerment and training of 2,412 young entrepreneurs, including 1,749 women, and the creation of more than 725 job opportunities within Damietta. Building on this success, Methanex Egypt further strengthened its commitment by signing a new five-year agreement with the ILO in October 2023, to continue the DJEP program in Damietta through a USD $2 million donation to create ~1,000 jobs, promote entrepreneurship, facilitate job matching and build the capacity of local service providers. So far, the new agreement has empowered and trained 1,099 young entrepreneurs, including 836 women, and created more than 677 job opportunities in Damietta. This brings the program’s total impact since its launch in 2018 to 3,511 beneficiaries, including 2,585 women, and more than 1,402 jobs created.
Additionally, in recognition of our contributions to the enrichment of the culture of micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises in Damietta, we were honoured with the International Council for Small Business (ICSB) Humane Entrepreneurship Award, marking a significant milestone for our efforts.
