Senior Financial Analyst

Position Summary

The Senior Financial Analyst provides analytical and financial expertise to the Methanex Medicine Hat site, facilitating informed business decisions and effective management of resources. This role will also focus on financial stewardship and reputation through compliance with accounting standards, company policies, and sound governance. Additionally, the Senior Financial Analyst is responsible for managing and coordinating project control activities

Position Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement project control plans, procedures, and processes that will ensure effective project management
  • Ensure processes are in line with Company policies and guidelines
  • Oversee the development and maintenance of project cost estimates and budgets
  • Ensure that project progress is tracked and monitored using appropriate metrics and that reports are prepared for project stakeholders on a timely basis
  • Identify and analyze project risks and develop risk mitigation strategies
  • Ensure compliance with the Manufacturing Capital Management Process Standard (MCMP)
  • Collaborate with project stakeholders to ensure that project objectives are met within scope, budget, and schedule
  • Develop and maintain project management documentation, including status reports, progress reports, cost reports, and basis of estimates.
  • Lead project cost reviews and provide recommendations for improvement to project processes
  • Coordinate with other department managers and functional teams to ensure that project goals and objectives are aligned and that resources are utilized effectively.
  • Facilitates communication between project stakeholders and team members to ensure that project goals are met
  • Review Authorization for Expenditures (AFE’s) for completeness and reasonableness
  • Ensure approvals per Company policy are obtained prior to activating AFE’s in systems
  • Liaise with project managers ensuring timely close-outs of projects
  • Provide timely and clear monthly reporting on the capital program, project status, and costs
  • Prepare capital spend and cash flow forecast updates
  • Responsible for being a change agent for our Financial and Asset Management systems to achieve operational excellence by understanding business processes and requirements, identifying system and business process improvements within and across departments
  • Maintain fixed assets register including major components, installed cost, in-service date, and useful life to accounting standards and property tax assessment guidelines
  • Manage depreciation schedules and ensure depreciation is calculated accurately and entered into the general ledger
  • Provide depreciation estimates for site forecast
  • Coordinate the annual site capital plan, including management reviews
  • Coordinate and report monthly/quarterly capital forecasts
  • Provide analysis of trends and comparisons
  • Ensure Methanex Corporation maintains accurate general ledger balances and financials by preparing and entering journal entries and accurate reconciliation of balance sheet accounts
  • Prepare journal entries as required
  • Maintain good knowledge of IFRS (International Financial Reporting Standards) and Accounting Standards
  • Prepare accurate, relevant, reliable, and timely financial reports (monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements) to corporate finance/treasury, senior management, and Global Manufacturing Team (GMT)
  • Provide a detailed review of financial results to determine the accuracy and completeness of the information
  • Design and prepare management reports with good-quality analysis for projects and initiatives
  • Present monthly financial results to the site management team with analysis of significant items, trends, and comparisons to budgets
  • Evaluate commercial agreements ensuring continued economic viability– C02, Electricity
  • Review invoicing and price adjustments to contract
  • Perform economic evaluations for projects as needed
  • Economic evaluations supporting and optimizing operational strategies
  • Understand provincial property and machinery & equipment assessment reporting requirements and submit reporting as per requirements
  • Liaise with consultant as needed to ensure fairness of assessments
  • Review tax assessments prior to payment
  • Maintain and monitor the system of internal controls ensuring effectiveness and compliance.
  • Approvals of journal entries, payment purchase requests, and vendor changes in Oracle.
  • Review and maintain relevant Sarbanes Oxley process narratives.
  • Review and approve vendor additions/changes
  • Work with internal & external auditors and coordinate information requests
  • Provide input and assistance into the implementation of any new financial systems or modules ensuring that their capability and use are optimized and fit for purpose
  • Participate as an active member of the Finance team, providing support and mentorship to team members as needed.

Position Qualifications

Experience and Technical Skills/Knowledge

  • A bachelor’s degree in business, economics, finance, or accounting is required. A master’s degree in finance, economics, or business administration will be considered an asset
  • Certified Professional Accountant (CPA) designation preferred
  • Minimum 10 years applicable post-graduate experience, ideally in manufacturing, or petrochemicals environment with project controls experience.
  • Experience analyzing financial statements, modelling financial scenarios, and making financial projections.
  • Sound knowledge of accounting principles and standards, particularly International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) and financial statement preparation
  • Excellent financial, analytical, research, and communication skills; ability to question results and not accept information at face value
  • Possess the aptitude to run and use specific systems such as Peoplesoft Financials
  • Strong working knowledge of financial systems/applications, excellent Excel skills in data compilation and aggregation (i.e., pivot tables, VLOOKUP)
