Position Summary

Carry out the I&C engineering function duties; cover call-out duties for the control systems function, execute Instrument and Control System design changes as applicable, perform technical studies, manage vulnerabilities, conduct root cause failure analysis, implement Instrument and Control Systems health monitoring program with a focus on Safety & Reliability. Support managing the assigned I&C projects to ensure work is completed safely, in a cost-effective manner, within budget and schedule, and to the standards required. Provide project, technical, and maintenance support to other disciplines and departments in the I&C domain.
The function covers all the applicable design, reliability, and maintainability aspects of Distributed Control Systems (DCS), Safety Instrumented Systems (SIS), Turbomachinery Controls (TMC), field instruments and final control elements, analyzers, PLCs, and F&G systems.

Position Responsibilities

  • Provide the Instrument & Control technical expertise to other business functions to achieve safe, reliable, and efficient plant operation.
  • Plan and coordinate with other business functions the effective implementation of I&C related activities to guarantee quality and timely deliverables.
  • Cover control function on-call and remote verification duties such as IBC implementation, plant disturbance troubleshooting and operations support, and alarm inhibition.
  • Support developing the written procedures to be followed by other business functions for Instrument & Control activities to ensure compliance with applicable standards and best practices.
  • Provide technical advice to other business functions for I&C related reliability issues.
  • Identify, develop, and communicate applicable I&C related lessons-learned to achieve continuous improvement.
  • Liaise with other Methanex sites I&C engineering and maintenance groups to share experiences and lessons learned.
  • Work with the more senior team members to verify designs and develop technical solutions to chronic reliability issues.
  • Demonstrate and ensure compliance for company responsible care policy (RC), including contractors and vendors supervision to achieve the safety targets and comply with the RC expectations.
  • Support managing complex I&C technical aspects in plant design changes in accordance with the company management of change system. To ensure compliance with process safety management (PSM) requirements.
  • Support the evaluation process of the proposed design changes to develop the optimum engineering solutions according to the plant design basis.
  • Apply identified Process Hazard Analysis techniques to the proposed design changes to eliminate or mitigate the introduced hazards with the change.
  • Support developing cost estimate and identifying required resources for the proposed design changes.
  • Develop basic and detailed engineering required for the proposed design changes according to applicable codes and standards and Methanex Project Standards.
  • Provide technical support during design changes execution phase to ensure smooth and accurate implementation.
  • Support establishing the test, commissioning, and start-up procedures for the design changes, to achieve safe and reliable start-up and operation.
  • Support maintaining the plant applicable I&C documents updated according to the implemented design changes, to reflect accurate plant as built.
  • Implement the applicable I&C procedures necessary to ensure the safe, efficient, and reliable operation of owned assets.
  • Support Identifying the Instrument and Control systems related vulnerabilities and reliability issues to improve the plant uptime.
  • Provide engineering solutions for vulnerability and reliability issues according to applicable codes, standards, and good engineering practices.
  • Conduct Root Cause Analysis for reliability incidents in conjunction with other departments to provide corrective actions.
  • Maintain effective and healthy communication channels with key I&C vendors and engineering firms to provide technical support as required.
  • Execute and help with developing the I&C assets health monitoring procedures according to plant condition monitoring strategy.
  • Support maintenance department in the setup of the preventive and predictive maintenance program for field instruments.
  • Support the development of I&C asset strategies.
  • Demonstrate RC behavior to achieve Company Responsible Care KPI’s by the following:
    • Comply with Site safety rules, policies, and procedures.
    • Strictly use job-related PPE for self (and subordinates when applicable).
    • Adhere to Methanex work permit system (WSCS) while performing any work/activity within Methanex sites.
    • Commit to all RC initiatives such as Training, Health Checks, Industrial Hygiene Programs, Ergonomics program, Walk Downs, Audits…etc.
    • Cease immediately any work/activity should it be threating or has the potential to threaten lives, Environment or Properties.
    • Effectively use all performance improvement related systems (KMI, Workday, PSM tools, Reliability tools…etc.).

Position Qualifications

Experience/knowledge

5+ years of experience in the Control Systems and Instrumentation in petrochemical, refinery or oil and gas plants design, operations and maintenance.

Education/Training

Bachelor of Science in Electrical/Electronics/Communications Engineering or equivalent.

Functional Safety professional (ex: CFSP, ISA 84 or TUV certification)

Skills/other requirements

  • Basic working knowledge of Bentley Nevada Machinery 3500.
  • Good Experience in F&G protective systems.
  • Good Experience in DCS cybersecurity and plant IT systems (PI, Maximo, etc.)
  • Good Experience in control valve Selection & Sizing.
  • Basic working knowledge of Business Management and CMMS software
  • Strong collaboration and communication skills with the ability to develop plans and actions
  • Excellent command of English language.
  • Proficient in Microsoft skills.
  • Proven technical knowledge in the design and maintenance of Control Systems equipment.
  • Strong working knowledge in DCS and SIS systems, familiar with Invensys/Foxboro DCS and Triconex.
  • Good working knowledge in field instrumentation, analyzers and final elements.
  • Good working knowledge of machinery protection Instruments
  • Basic working knowledge of reliability engineering applicable concepts
