Construction Materials

Methanol is used to make construction materials such as plywood and medium-density fibreboard (MDF), enabling the reuse of wood scraps that would otherwise go to waste. Methanol is also an essential ingredient in sealants, paints and solvents.

In 2020, Methanex donated US$1.7 million and almost 7,500 hours of employee time to community efforts around the world, with a particular focus on COVID-19 relief efforts.

Methanol is used in the technologies that keep us connected, like laptops and cellphones. It’s also used in textiles, including carpet and clothing.

Building Block

Methanol is a chemical building block used to enable clean energy applications such as solar panels and wind turbines.

Essential Supplies

Methanol is a component of essential medical supplies and personal protective equipment used in the fight against COVID-19

Seeking Opportunities

We continue to seek opportunities to reduce our CO2 emissions footprint. In 2020, Methanex produced more than 59,000 tonnes of low-carbon methanol at our Medicine Hat plant using captured CO2 from a neighbouring industrial facility, that would otherwise be emitted to the atmosphere.

Environmental Impact

We strive to minimize our environmental impact through initiatives that reduce greenhouse gas and other air emissions; efficiently using resources such as natural gas, energy and water; and preventing spills and minimizing waste from our operations.

The safety of our team members and communities is our number one priority. Methanex works to build a safe and diverse workplace culture.

Methanex obtained International Sustainability & Carbon Certification for biomethanol production in the US. We achieved this certification by producing biomethanol at two of our Geismar plants using biomethane (renewable natural gas) from municipal solid waste and other sources.

Safe and Clean

As a safe, clean-burning marine fuel for the commercial shipping industry, methanol significantly reduces emissions. In 2020, Waterfront Shipping ordered eight new low-emission methanol-fuelled vessels for its fleet.

Safe Handling

We promote methanol safe-handling throughout our supply chain and beyond. In 2020, we received a Grand Slam Award from the Association of American Railroads for our rail safety performance - the fifth year in a row that we received this award.

Maximizing Efficiency

To maximize efficiency and return as much water to the environment as possible, our facilities follow strict water conservation procedures to minimize, reuse and recycle water.

Buildings represent 40% of global energy consumption and CO2 emissions. Methanol is used in the materials to construct and insulate our homes and buildings which helps reduce heat loss, make them energy efficient and reduce emissions.

Automotive Components

Methanol is used to produce automotive components (such as body panels, gears and dashboard foam) that make cars lighter and more fuel efficient, thereby reducing their CO2 emissions.

Clean Burning

A clean-burning liquid fuel, methanol can be used instead of diesel in vehicles and trucks. As of 2020, there are approximately a 100 fuel stations in China that service 25,000 M100 taxis, which run on 100% methanol fuel.
