Safety and Industrial Hygiene Advisor

Position Summary

The Safety and Industrial Hygiene Advisor provides specialist technical and practical advice and solutions regarding all aspects of the occupational safety and industrial hygiene safety and health program at Methanex Medicine Hat. The position is responsible for assessing and ensuring compliance of Methanex Medicine Hat site with federal, provincial, and municipal Occupational Health and Safety legislation, Methanex Corporation and Industry standards in order to promote the well-being of employees in the workplace, avoid exposure to risk, and to reduce costs related to workplace health and safety.

Position Responsibilities

Key responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Lead by example to promote a strong safety culture and Responsible Care principles
  • Build trusted relationships and provide practical safety coaching to employees and contractors
  • Recognize positive behaviours and address non-compliance through constructive conversations
  • Deliver safety meetings, briefings, and training to enhance awareness and compliance
  • Develop, implement, and maintain safety and industrial hygiene programs (e.g., respiratory, noise, asbestos)
  • Actively promote and reinforce compliance with OHS and Responsible Care policies, procedures, and applicable standards
  • Monitor program effectiveness using data analysis and drive continuous improvement
  • Identify emerging health, safety and industrial hygiene risks (e.g. fall protection, gas monitoring) and implement appropriate controls and processes
  • Maintain a visible field presence to identify hazards and promote safe work practices
  • Assess and evaluate work procedures and environments to identify potential hazards and eliminate them or ensure adequate controls are in place
  • Coordinate industrial hygiene monitoring and support permitting processes
  • Advise on the implementation of the site risk management procedures as they relate to the different departments (Technical, Maintenance, Operations)
  • Lead or support risk assessments, hazard analysis, and process safety reviews
  • Attend work order and Management of Change projects kick-off, check prints, process hazard assessments, risk assessments, and acceptance meetings to identify, specify and ensure that Responsible Care requirements are identified and implemented.
  • Provide safety input into projects, turnarounds, operations and maintenance activities
  • Ensure safety requirements are integrated into planning and execution phases
  • Support reporting, investigation, and analysis of incidents, hazards, and near misses
  • Identify root causes, using TapRoot®, Appollo®, HFAT® or other root cause analysis methodology

and implement corrective actions to prevent recurrence

  • Develop and share lessons learned and ensure continuous improvement
  • Develop and deliver safety training and site orientations
  • Collaborate with contractors, consultants, and internal teams on safety initiatives
  • Participate in committees and cross-functional safety teams
  • Conduct audits and inspections to ensure compliance with safety standards
  • Track contractor performance and program effectiveness
  • Demonstrate integrity, professionalism, and commitment to Responsible Care
  • Uphold company values and act as a role model for safe and ethical behaviour

Position Qualifications

Experience and Technical Knowledge/Skills

  • Post-secondary Diploma and/or Degree in Occupational Health and Safety or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • ACSA National Construction Safety Officer (NCSO) Certificate
  • Board of Canadian Registered Safety Professionals (CRSP) accreditation or the ability to pursue.
  • Five years’ related Health and Safety experience in the oil and gas and/or petrochemical industry.
  • Accredited auditor training
  • Process hazard analysis training
  • Strong knowledge of occupational health issues, legislation, and applicable standards, with ability to interpret and apply requirements
  • Experience conducting audits, analyzing safety data, and identifying trends to reduce risk and improve workplace conditions
  • Proven problem-solving skills, including incident investigation and recommending effective corrective actions
  • Ability to advise leaders and deliver engaging health and safety training using adult learning principles
  • Demonstrated proficiency with Microsoft Office suite of programs, particularly Word, Excel, Power Point, and Outlook, as well as web-based applications.
