Position Summary

The Process Safety Engineer is responsible for leading and maintaining the site’s Process Safety Management (PSM), risk management, and loss prevention programs to identify, assess, and reduce major accident hazards. The role provides technical expertise in process safety, hazard analysis, risk assessment, functional safety, management of change, and incident learning to help ensure the safe, reliable, and compliant operation of the Medicine Hat facility while supporting Methanex’s commitment to Responsible Care and continuous improvement.

Position Responsibilities

Including but not limited to:

  • Lead the implementation, maintenance, and continuous improvement of the site’s Process Safety Management (PSM), risk management, and loss prevention programs to reduce and manage operational risk.
  • Provide technical expertise in process hazard analysis, risk assessment, Major Accident Hazard (MAH) management, functional safety, and Safety Critical Element governance.
  • Facilitate and support hazard and risk studies, including HAZOP, LOPA, risk assessments, consequence modelling, and fire hazard analyses, ensuring risks are effectively managed to ALARP principles.
  • Monitor process safety performance through KPI tracking, analysis, reporting, and the identification of improvement opportunities.
  • Provide process safety support for projects, plant modifications, turnarounds, Management of Change (MOC) activities, and Pre-Startup Safety Reviews (PSSRs).
  • Lead or support investigations of process safety incidents, identify root causes, develop corrective actions, and promote organizational learning through effective follow-up and implementation.
  • Ensure compliance with corporate standards, regulatory requirements, industry best practices, and evolving process safety and risk management expectations.
  • Coordinate and participate in audits, insurance reviews, assessments, and assurance activities, ensuring timely closure and effectiveness of resulting actions.
  • Provide coaching, training, and technical guidance to employees and contractors, and support cross-functional teams in the application of process safety principles and risk management practices.
  • Demonstrate Methanex values and conduct all activities in accordance with the Responsible Care® ethic, promoting safe, reliable, and sustainable operations.

Position Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering.
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in a chemical manufacturing, process operations, or technical environment.
  • Strong knowledge of Process Safety Management (PSM), risk management, loss prevention, hazard analysis (HAZOP/LOPA), functional safety, and major accident hazard management.
  • Experience leading or facilitating risk assessments, incident investigations, and multidisciplinary hazard studies.
  • Knowledge of applicable process safety, fire protection, asset integrity, and industry standards.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
  • Excellent communication, collaboration, and stakeholder management abilities.
  • Highly organized with the ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office and relevant engineering or risk management software.
