Position Summary

The Process Engineer role works alongside the Technical department to identify and implement operational improvements that enhance plant efficiency and productivity, ensuring safe and reliable performance while minimizing risks to people, equipment, and the environment.

This role is a two-year temporary contract.

Position Responsibilities

Key responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Support the plant site to achieve daily excellence in plant operation by tracking and proposing process changes to meet established targets in plant rate and energy efficiency
  • Provide engineering input into troubleshooting operational problems, plant upsets, and plant shutdowns/startups
  • Participate in development of process related procedures (eg. catalyst reduction)
  • Provide process engineering support, including equipment sizing, for plant changes using the Plant Change Request procedures
  • Maintain, perform and update a plant monitoring program to track the operational performance of key process equipment, and issue associated monitoring reports
  • Participate in Process Hazard Analysis studies, such as Hazard and Operability Analysis (HAZOP) or Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEA), to identify and minimize risk and mitigate hazards throughout the plant
  • Actively involved in the 20 elements of PSM (eg. Process Knowledge Management)
  • Participate in Process and Non-Process Safety Audits, as per the assigned schedule
  • Ensure implementation of relevant Engineering, Projects & IT procedures
  • Network with other Process Engineering Teams at Global Methanex sites to the mutual benefit of all sites
  • Provide financial analysis and/or feasibility studies for plant projects
  • Ensure project work is implemented in accordance with Methanex procedures, Methanex Project Standards (MPS), International Standards, and Alberta legislation
  • Ensure compliance with all Pressure Equipment Integrity Management (PEIM) responsibilities, relative to role, as per the PEIM Manual.
  • Assist in the preparation of reports to government on releases
  • Conduct all business in a manner which supports the Responsible Care® ethic
  • Remain current with all safety and procedural training related to the role
  • Actively participate in the site’s behavioural based safety program, Everyone Owns Safety (EOS), by completing safety observations on a monthly basis
  • Understand the Global Environmental Policy and how it affects operation of Methanex Medicine Hat. Assist in the preparation of reports to government documenting environmental releases
  • Participate in incident investigations and root cause analysis

Position Qualifications

Technical Skills, Knowledge, and Experience:

  • Undergraduate degree in Chemical Engineering
  • Eligibility for EIT or P. Eng. membership with APEGA
  • 3-5 years engineering experience, at least 2 years working in gas processing facility
  • Relevant experience with Process Modelling software such as Aspen HYSYS and Aspen Exchanger Design and Rating, or equivalent
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office software, particularly Excel, Word, Outlook and Visio
  • Competency with hazard review/analysis software – PHAPro is preferred
