Operations Technician

Position Summary

The Operations Technician works in the areas of utilities and product storage to ensure safe, efficient, and consistent plant operations, in compliance with relevant safety codes, government regulations, and product quality standards. The Operations Technician is expected to pursue further training and certifications for advancement within Methanex Medicine Hat’s progression system.

Position Responsibilities

  • Operation and Monitoring: Control, start, shut down, and monitor boilers and related equipment using computerized or manual systems; monitor alarms, gauges, and instruments.
  • Equipment Lockouts: Isolate and lock out equipment mechanically and electrically for inspection and repair.
  • Water Treatment: Test and regenerate exchangers to ensure a constant supply of demineralized water and retrieve boiler water samples for chemical treatment.
  • Maintenance & Safety: Maintain logs, develop isolation packages, submit work requests, and coordinate maintenance activities with other departments.
  • Preventive Actions: Take preventive and corrective measures to avoid equipment failures, injuries, and environmental damage.
  • Compliance & Safety: Ensure compliance with regulations (ABSA, ASME, OHS, CSA) and site-specific policies (PEIM, City of Medicine Hat environmental rules).
  • Training & Development: Complete training manuals for Tech levels, and orient/train new hires and summer students.
  • Chemical & Procedure Oversight: Act as authority for lockouts, chemical handling, and ensure compliance with Methanex policies and standards.
  • Emergency Response & Feedback: Participate in emergency drills, safety meetings, provide and receive feedback, and report safety incidents.
  • Adherence to Policies: Ensure familiarity and compliance with Methanex’s vision, policies, values, and stay current with safety/procedural training

Position Qualifications

Experience and Technical Knowledge/Skills

  • 3rd Class Power Engineer certification required
  • Active progression towards next class of Power Engineer certification is an asset
  • Two-year post-secondary diploma in Power Engineering Technology
  • Experience in a petrochemical plant, refinery, or other related industrial setting, with previous experience in water treatment processes, high pressure steam generation, or steam/methane reforming being an asset
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office and web-based applications
  • Valid Class 5 Driver’s License
