I&E/Mechanical Engineering Summer Student

Position Summary

The Engineering Summer Student (Mechanical / Instrument & Electrical) supports the Engineering team by assisting with technical, analytical, project, and field-based activities related to plant operations. This role provides hands-on experience applying engineering principles in an industrial environment, with exposure to mechanical equipment, instrumentation, control systems, and electrical systems.

The student will develop technical knowledge, problem-solving skills, and an understanding of plant systems, control strategies, and Methanex standards while working alongside experienced engineers in a safety-focused environment.

One position is available, and candidates from either Mechanical or Instrumentation & Electrical engineering disciplines will be considered.

This is a temporary opportunity with a duration of four (4) months.

Position Responsibilities

  • Support engineers with technical and field-based activities related to plant operations and equipment.
  • Assist in monitoring equipment and system performance and help identify improvement opportunities.
  • Participate in troubleshooting activities under the guidance of experienced engineers.
  • Support engineering projects through data collection, tracking, documentation, and coordination.
  • Assist in the preparation and updating of technical documentation, drawings, and reports.
  • Contribute to the development of scopes of work, schedules, and basic cost estimates.
  • Support Management of Change (MOC) and Manufacturing Capital Management Process (MCMP) requirements, including documentation and tracking.
  • Participate in turnaround and outage activities, supporting planning and execution as required.
  • Collect and analyze operational and maintenance data to support engineering and reliability decisions.
  • Conduct field walkdowns and inspections to verify equipment conditions and gather information.
  • Support reliability and continuous improvement initiatives across the site.
  • Apply fundamental engineering principles in a practical, industrial environment while developing an understanding of plant systems and processes.
  • Collaborate across multiple projects and teams to build technical knowledge and professional skills.
  • Adhere to Methanex safety standards and Responsible Care® principles, including participation in safety training and site safety programs.

Position Qualifications

Experience and Technical Knowledge/Skills

  • Currently enrolled in a Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Instrumentation, or related engineering degree program.
  • Completion of at least second or third year of study at an accredited university with a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.8 on a 4-point scale.
  • Basic understanding of engineering principles relevant to the candidate’s discipline (mechanical, electrical, or instrumentation).
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, particularly Excel.
  • Exposure to engineering tools or systems relevant to the discipline (e.g., CAD software, control systems such as DCS/PLC, or other analysis tools) is considered an asset.
  • Demonstrated interest in industrial operations, maintenance, or plant environments is considered an asset.
