Commercial Planner

Position Summary

The Commercial Planner for Waterfront Shipping is responsible for tactical (0–120 day) vessel planning to ensure Waterfront has sufficient contracted capacity to transport all Methanex cargoes globally. Working closely with Chartering, the role updates and executes the tactical vessel employment strategy to meet contractual obligations while optimizing shipping economics and profitability, whilst ensuring alignment with the broader strategic plan. The incumbent actively manages risks and changes to the tactical plan, communicates these with teammates and leadership, and secures spot or alternative arrangements when required. The role also coordinates voyage planning with Operations, Global Supply Chain, and regional M&L teams, with a strong internal customer focus. 

Position Responsibilities

  • Focus on achieving the lowest possible rates for the service levels required for spot shipments 
  • Develop and leverage a strong understanding of the shipping market to identify opportunities 
  • Host/lead regular planning calls with Global Supply Chain and Marketing & Logistics regions 
  • Maintain constant communication with Waterfront Operations to ensure forward vessel planning is understood, risks are communicated and issues are resolved 
  • Develop strong relationships with our third-party vessel providers and our broker network 
  • Calculate deviation claims on methanol voyages for rebilling 
  • Gather third party methanol movement intelligence from brokers, vessel owners and other market participants and share with appropriate parties 
  • Provide Methanex with rate and cost estimates for various supply scenarios and communicate all potential risks, applying judgment and market knowledge / information 
  • Provide Methanex with forward freight forecasts on a monthly basis coordinating with Chartering Manager(s), using guidance from brokers 
  • Ensure ISO / Responsible Care requirements are followed in day-to-day dealings and incorporated in agreements 
  • Assist in establishing and renewing Contracts of Affreightments (COAs) 
  • Participate in ERP enhancement initiatives (IMOS) 
  • Seek opportunities to streamline processes, create efficiency, and utilize IT solutions to enhance the overall effectiveness of Commercial department 
  • Support ad-hoc requests for reports, data analysis, budget input, and projects as needed  

Position Qualifications

  • 3-5+ years’ relevant work experience in supply chain / logistics planning 
  • Understanding of the shipping market through industry experience required; vessel operations experience is an asset 
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills; phone conversations are a critical part of this role 
  • Strong interpersonal skills to build and maintain positive relationships with internal and external stakeholders 
  • Proven ability to influence without authority, and negotiate on a win-win basis with partners 
  • Problem-solving skills using both an analytical approach based on quantitative and qualitative data as well as creative thinking – financial acumen and analytical skills required 
  • Bachelor’s degree
