Position Summary
Waterfront Shipping, a joint venture entity owned by Methanex and Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, is a global marine transportation company specializing in the safe, responsible, and reliable transport of bulk chemicals and clean petroleum products to North America, Asia Pacific, Europe, and Latin America. We are seeking an experienced Marine Operator to be based in our Singapore office. The Marine Operator is primarily responsible for the day-to-day operations of Waterfront Shipping’s fleet, Contracts of Affreightment (COA), and spot vessels, with specific focus on utilizing Waterfront Shipping’s resources in the most economic and efficient way. The incumbent works closely with Waterfront Shipping’s customers, vessel masters, agents, owners, and bunker brokers on responsibilities for vessel and port coordination, data-keeping, shipping accounting, ISO and Responsible Care.
Position Responsibilities
Vessel Coordination
- Build strong relationships with vessel Master; make periodic assessments of owners and ships
- Provide adequate voyage instructions to vessel
- Keep track of vessel’s off-hire and declare vessel off-hire when applicable
- Coordinate with Masters for maximum cargo intake at load ports
- Coordinate with vessels for arrival times, drafts, and check vessel’s bunker consumption
- Coordinate bunker requirements and place orders as per Waterfront standards
- Develop and/or maintain KPIs for measuring vessel’s performance; keep updated data for assigned ships
Port Coordination
- Build strong relationship with agents; make periodic assessments of agents and terminal
- Nominate agencies, review pro-formas and approve payments
- Coordinate/centralise all ship-agent communication
- Develop and/or maintain KPIs for measuring times in port
- Review port times, question lost times, and make suggestions, before, during and after port stay
- Keep updated data for all ports in assigned geographical area and coordinate all shipping documentation
Communication & Data Maintenance
- Maintain organised voyage files as per company standards
- Ensure complete and accurate vessel handovers between voyage legs, between operators
- Ensure all IMOS forms are approved timely and accurately
- Maintain timely archiving of emails and required voyage documents uploaded into IMOS
- Maintain excellent level of communication with key stakeholders in assigned regions
- Provide relevant information to customers as requested
Accounting
- Revise and pre-approve estimated port costs and final disbursement accounts as per company standards
- Provide support to Claims Specialist as required for all claims (e.g. demurrage, laytime, etc.)
- Assist accounting department with all relevant information
- Check and pre approve freight invoices
- Prepare voyage estimates on timely fashion
Tank Cleaning
- Continuously monitor tank cleaning performance and instruct vessels, Owners and Managers with cleaning procedures with management support
- Coordinate with management for advice on tank cleaning progress
Position Qualifications
- Post-Secondary education (Bachelor Degree or Diploma or Certificate) in a related field, or equivalent work experience
- 5+ years’ experience in shipping / marine operations
- Strong knowledge of shipping industry and business – how ships, ports, and terminals operate; appropriate handling of chemicals and other cargo; cost-structure of suppliers; tank cleaning process knowledge and application
- Ability to interpret and operate with Time Charter contracts, Contracts of Affreightment and Spot/voyage contracts
- Ability to understand and stay updated on international regulations, documentation and relevant maritime laws
- Effective communicator, with clear and concise verbal and written communications to provide timely and helpful information or instructions to others
- Skilled in negotiating while maintaining positive working relationships
- Flexible and capable of working independently with limited supervision
- Strong multitasker and extremely organized with commitment to meet deadlines
- Proficient in O365 suite (i.e. Excel, Word, PowerPoint) with ability to leverage technology / systems to optimize work processes and analyze data; experience with IMOS is an asset
