Methanex Receives Merit Award for its Responsible Care leadership in China 

On June 19, 2017, Methanex in Asia Pacific was honoured to receive a Merit Award from the Association of International Chemical Manufacturers (AICM) in China for its ongoing leadership in Responsible Care.

“As one of the first AICM member companies to sign the AICM Beijing Manifesto in 2008, we were thrilled to receive the AICM Merit Award in recognition of our efforts to build a culture of Responsible Care throughout the country,” says Simon Maddren, President of Asia Pacific.

The award was given to recognize Methanex’s significant contributions to the growth of Responsible Care through the company’s commitment to partnerships, education and outreach.

Education is central to Methanex’s Responsible Care initiatives. The company’s outreach initiatives include hosting seminars attended by customers, distributors, suppliers, logistics service providers, surveyors and emergency responders. These seminars raise awareness of the principles of Responsible Care and inform stakeholders of best practices in the proper use, distribution and safe handling of methanol.

Methanex also partners with terminal operators in China to hold educational “Open Days.” These annual events invite community members and stakeholders to tour facilities and learn first-hand about the chemical industry and the health, safety and environmental protection safeguards that are in place.

Partnering with industry associations and government agencies is also central to Methanex’s Responsible Care leadership in the country. In 2015, for example, Methanex entered into a partnership with the Chinese Government State Administration of Work Safety to co-publish a safety handbook for those transporting methanol by truck. The handbook is available for download on the SAWS website, and more than 1500 printed copies have been distributed to industry partners.

“Each member of our Asia Pacific team sees themselves as a Responsible Care ambassador,” says Simon Maddren. “They are continually looking for new and creative ways to promote Responsible Care with our stakeholders, and their passion has contributed to our Responsible Care leadership position in China. We will continue to find new and innovative ways to share the Responsible Care message with stakeholders throughout our product value chain.”
