Methanex in Egypt operates a state of the art methanol production facility located in Damietta, Egypt on the Mediterranean Sea that is among the most energy efficient methanol plants in the world with a production capacity of 1.3 million tonnes of methanol per year, primarily supplying domestic and European markets.
The Egyptian Methanex Methanol Company S.A.E. is a joint venture of Methanex Corporation which holds a 50% interest, together with the Egyptian government partners: Egyptian Petrochemical Holding Company (ECHEM), which holds 12%; Egyptian Natural Gas Holding Company (EGAS), which holds 12%; Egyptian National Gas Company (GASCO), which holds 9%, in addition to the Arab Petroleum Investments Corporation (APICORP), which holds 17%.
Methanex is the sole producer of methanol in Egypt; an essential ingredient used to produce hundreds of everyday industrial and consumer items. Methanol designated for the local Egyptian market is marketed by our partner, the Egyptian Petrochemical Holding Company and the remainder supplies our customers in Europe. The Methanex joint venture has been in operation since 2011.
Our community investment priorities reflect the global and local nature of our business and focus on areas where Methanex can make a unique and sustainable difference in Egypt including health, education, empowerment and training. Over the years, we have accelerated our Social Responsibility journey through strengthening our sustainability maturity and ensuring that positive impacts experienced by the community and local partners are enhanced and meaningful to their existence.
Through our unique partnership with the United Nations' International Labor Organization (ILO); we align our Social Investment strategy with Egypt’s Vision 2030 and the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by extending the full-scale of the ILO’s Decent Jobs for Egypt’s Young People (DJEP) project to Damietta addressing one of Egypt’s most pressing challenges, that of youth unemployment and underemployment. In recognition of our contributions to the enrichment of micro, small and medium-sized enterprise (MSME) culture in Damietta, in 2019, we received the International Council for Small Business (ICSB) Humane Entrepreneurship Award. Methanex Egypt is a proud member and a key player in the Egyptian petrochemicals and oil and gas sector. Through our commitment to safety and our successful collaboration and partnership with the Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources, our partner the Egyptian Petrochemicals holding company (ECHEM), the Egyptian General Petroleum Corporation (EGPC), (ECHEM) and other key holding companies such as (EGAS) and Ganoub El Wadi Petroleum Holding Company (Ganope), we were able to start a rich dialogue around Process Safety Management (PSM) within the sector. We hosted two PSM conferences in 2018 and 2019 that brought a total of 800 representatives from across Egyptian Petrochemicals, and Oil & Gas sector companies where world renowned speakers ran PSM focused workshops introducing PSM, sharing case studies and starting a wide discussion about the topic.
In 2020, we signed an official Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Egyptian Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources to embed the culture of Process Safety Management (PSM) within the Egyptian oil, gas and petrochemicals sector, in alignment with the Ministry’s modernization program. The MoU resulted in the formation of the Egyptian Process Safety Management (PSM) Steering Committee and a three-year roadmap for the industry.
In 2021, the Egyptian PSM Steering Committee hosted its annual PSM conference through an online webinar providing an update on the progress delivered despite a challenging year in 2020 and announced the formation of the Technical Sub-committee which drew upon the members of the capacity building team of the Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resource’s Modernization Program coupled with the expertise of steering committee members. They also announced the launch of the official website for the steering committee – www.PSMEgypt.com.
In March 2022, the PSM Steering committee hosted the first online knowledge sharing session to share four of the PSM standards and guidelines developed by the PSM Technical Sub-Committee and approved and issued by the Egyptian General Petroleum Corporation (EGPC). During the session, the Technical Sub-committee members rolled out the Risk Management Standard, PSM Program Standard, Major Accident Hazard (MAH) Management Guideline and the Quantitative Risk Assessment (QRA) Guideline, the first of 23 PSM standards and guidelines to be issued as part of the PSM MOU signed between Methanex Egypt and the Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources.
