Social Responsibility

Methanex’s Social Responsibility (SR) policy is an enhancement and natural evolution of our commitment to Responsible Care®, an ethic established by the Chemistry Industry Association of Canada (CIAC).

Just as Responsible Care has been an integral part of Methanex’s culture since its early days, the guiding principles of SR will be closely linked to the core values and business strategy of the Corporation. Nine basic guiding principles have been identified in Methanex’s SR policy. They cover ethics, accountability, governance, financial returns, employment practices, business relationships, products and services, community involvement and environmental protection.

Social Responsibility and Responsible Care are complementary initiatives and, when implemented in concert, they further enhance and strengthen Methanex’s commitment to health, safety and the environment.  For more information, please see our Responsible Care/Social Responsibility Report and Environmental Excellence Report.

Social Responsibility Programs

Wherever Methanex does business, it establishes an employee-run Social Responsibility Committee that devises a social strategy of community involvement aligned with Methanex's mission, core values and business objectives.

There are three ways that Methanex achieves these social responsibility objectives:

  • Partnering with employees. This is a matching grants partnership program for individual employees that encourages community fundraising efforts and volunteer activities.
  • Providing financial assistance to local community health and safety initiatives related to our Responsible Care ethic.
  • Supporting regional educational development through classroom initiatives and individual scholarship programs.

In addition to funding a wide variety of worthwhile community programs, Methanex employees contribute countless hours of volunteer time (both during regular working hours and on their own time) to their local communities.
