About the Responsible Care Ethic
The following six Codes of Practice from the Canadian Chemical Producers' Association are examples of how companies are guided in the management of chemical products throughout six phases of their life cycle.

1. Community Awareness & Emergency Response Code of Practice (CAER)
The CAER code states that every research and development, manufacturing, storage, distribution and waste management site will have an active community awareness and emergency response program in place. The site manager is responsible for implementing a program to address local emergency situations, and actively assist authorities in emergency response planning for neighbouring industry and the community.

The company is expected to be sensitive and responsive to community concerns. It is also expected to provide information to all stakeholders about the hazards and associated risks of chemicals, chemical products and process operations. Finally, the company is expected to work with governments to develop public policies, legislation and regulations governing community awareness and emergency response.
