Community
Outreach
People
are at the centre of Methanex Trinidad's Corporate Social
Responsibility initiatives as we focus on improving
lives in both our local community and in the broader
community of Trinidad and Tobago.
An emphasis on
education is a key focus for Methanex's community outreach
activities. Some programs include:
- Ongoing
support of the Methanex/University of Trinidad and
Tobago (UTT) Distinguished Professor Series, now in
its second year. Methanex's investment of TT$3
million over three years
exposes students and industry personnel to world-renowned
professors with expertise in engineering, technology
and business.
- Development of a UTT
bursary program for students in Engineering disciplines
to boost the country's cadre of energy sector professionals.
- Establishment of a full
degree scholarship to study Musical Arts at the University
of the West Indies' Centre for Creative and Festival
Arts and expansion of the University's bursary program.
- Adoption of Dow Village
Government Primary School and Couva Junior Secondary
School. The goal is to educate students on health
& safety, to provide fire extinguishers and first-aid
kits and to promote literacy and a love for reading
through library upgrades.
- Development of an interactive
workshop on Teenage Pregnancy, HIV and AIDS for students
(12 years and up) of neighbouring schools initiated
by Methanex Trinidad's Community Advisory Panel, and
supported by Methanex.
Responsible
Care, support for local culture and employee volunteerism
are additional areas of focus. Initiatives include:
- "Mentoring
Our Children" - a program where employees coach students
on life topics as well as school work. Students of
the program are also provided with uniforms, books
and transportation.
- Vacation Intern Program
Fundraiser - the
2007 vacation interns raised funds, which Methanex
matched, for items needed by the Wesleyan Children's
Home.

Community Advisory Panel (CAP)
Established
in 2003, Methanex Trinidad's Community Advisory Panel (CAP)
consists of nine members from the community near the plant
site, in addition to two Methanex representatives. Community
members come from a wide variety of backgrounds including
a fireman, retired teacher, housewife, student and an optometrist.
CAP meetings are held on-site at least four times a year.
At meetings, CAP members receive information on several aspects
of Methanex business - from Responsible Care and plant reliability
improvements to business performance and community projects.
The productive partnership with CAP brings Methanex closer
to the community and in turn, the community is able to communicate
with Methanex through direct interaction.
Methanex
Trinidad also reaches out to the community through its participation
in the Point Lisas Industrial Estate's Community Awareness
and Emergency Response program (CAER). The CAER committee
interacts with youth groups, local village councils and the
community at large to address education, health & safety
and environmental concerns.
